I was fascinated to see that Google Finance is now offering free real-time stock quotes. Leave it to Google.

Congratulations to NASA May 26th, 2008

Last night we shared the excitement as the Phoenix lander touched down on Mars. Watching the nasa.gov HD feed with countless others, we witnessed the accomplishment of what we can do as a nation when we apply ourselves correctly and appropriately to a task. Great job!

Palm Links for a Friend February 8th, 2008

A coworker is getting herself a Palm TX and we have been chatting about how I use mine. Of course I use the information tools like calendar, contacts, tasks & memos that come with it. I got my first Palm3 about 1996 over the years I have built a collection of other programs and accessories I use. For her convenience (and anyone elses) I am including a list of links for my favorite Palm programs and accessories.

Programs - in the order of how much I use them. The titles are links to their sites.

Brainforest is the outlining program that is my primary data storage. It is where I keep most of my important information from passwords to lists to instructions to procedures to . . . you get the point.

DayNotez is what I use to keep track of all the notes that I write everyday from the name of a store to a good idea to things I just don’t want to forget.

Bugme lets me write on the Palm screen like a post-it note & then set an alarm for any time in the next week so it will “Bug Me” with a reminder. I use it constantly.

Ereader is what I use for all of the books I keep with me on my Palm. Their reader is the one I like the best. I have purchased a number of books as well as their Websters dictionary & thesaurus & Spanish dictionary so I can look up words just by highlighting them. I purchased their ebook studio so I could convert other documents and text to ereader books.

Pocket Tunes came with the TX but I purchased and upgraded. I use this to listen to music, internet radio and podcasts.

Audio Gateway lets me listen to my Palm wirelessly in stereo through bluetooth headphones. My headphones are the Motorola HT820.

AV Capture Suite allows me to capture podcasts, audio and video, but more important streaming audio or video. This lets me pick my favorite internet radio programs, record them when they are on and move them to my Palm to enjoy at my leisure.

Jshopper is the program I use for my shopping lists. It lets me keep track of prices, different stores, note how many of an item I want. I like that I can sort the list alphabetically to edit it but sort by aisle when I get to the store so the list is in the order I pass the items as I wheel my cart through the store.

Par-Pro is the software I use for sound recording on the Palm. I record memos and also meetings. You have to have an external mike and the Bud-Mic from Tech Center Labs is the best I’ve found. For recording meetings you may have to peak the quality with an audio editing program. Audacity is excellent and free.

TCPMP lets you watch videos and movies on the TX. So does Kinoma.

Adobe Reader lets you read pdf files on the palm. Since this is a document standard, there are a lot of free books and documents available in this format. In addition some books are only available for purchase in this format. The reader is free.

Mapopolis lets me carry a map in my Palm. It can link via bluetooth to a GPS receiver to show you where you are and direct you to where you are going.

PocketDoan is a handy little program for timing meditations . . . or other things like 15-minute breaks.

    Accessories

Rhinoskin aluminum case is the best protection if you have a rugged lifestyle or carry the Palm in your pants pocket. Comes with a removable belt clip.

Slipper Case from EB Cases is my preference for a leather case. It is available with or without a belt clip.

Motorola HT820 Bluetooth Headphones allow me to listen to the music & podcasts on my Palm wirelessly and still take a phone call from my bluetooth phone.

Bud-Mic from Tech Center Labs plugs into the bottom of the TX and acts as a microphone to let me use the Palm as a digital audio recorder. The quality is good enough to record meetings as well as memos.

Screenguardz screen protectors keep the screen scratch free while I touch and write away with abandon.

Gracious, its been a long time August 11th, 2007

Back in the spring when my nephew was assaulted and near death in the hospital, just about all of our routines were disrupted. In the weeks following I became more active in the affairs of my union and just found that my focus had changed. Though I still took time to scan the news and technology blogs, I was just not so involved and interested in blogging on them as I had been. I will maintain this space for that which catches my notice but I am not focused as I had been.

The Simple Power of Google Reader May 13th, 2007

I have scanned Google reader a few times but never really understood its power until yesterday. I have used my my.yahoo homepage to keep up on my rss feeds and was habituated enough to its layout that the Google format felt awkward. But yesterday Yahoo seemed to be having some problems and I wanted my news so I pulled up Google reader and used it for the day. By the time Yahoo was back up and running I had converted.

The shear simplicity of Google’s organization and the ability to bring up the article in its native layout with graphics, right in the Google reader is superb. I still conduct my morning update by scanning each site for its new listings, but the reader opens in the “All” layout letting me update throughout by seeing the new listings from all of my sites at once. The efficiency of Google’s layout has cut my read to a fraction of its former time. I heartily recommend you spend enough time with the reader to see tis power.

Recently the technology has been medical March 31st, 2007

Recently my nephew was savagely beaten and has been unconscious in the UMC intensive care unit. Visiting him and support for his family has occupied much of our time and thought these past few days and that has left these pages bare. His name is Tommy Yugovich and any thoughts and prayers you send will be gratefully appreciated.

The severity of Tommy’s injuries has meant that we have been exposed to a large cross section of modern medical technology and it is staggering. Perhaps when things return to normal I will write about it but for the moment I appreciate your patience.
